We are in Marquette, Michigan at Gitche Gumee RV Park

We pulled the trailer across the Mackinaw Bridge, and into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  We were in route to Duluth, Minnesota, and at 427 miles, it’s just a bit to far for us for one day.  Just before Marquette, is a RV Park called Gitche Gumee RV Park, and this is where we stopped for the night.  We had time left in the day to drive to town and do some exploring.

After scouting out a place to refuel the van, we went on a sightseeing trip through Marquette, and with the old buildings, and being built on a hill, reminded me a little of Hood River, Oregon.  Out on Lake Superior, we could see a large freighter approaching the city.  To get a closer look of the large ship, we drove to the north side of town, where a Ore Loading Facility was located.

The ship slowed down and was able to park alongside of this huge building that was over 1/4 mile long.  There are several railroad tracks on top of this structure, and all seemed to be filled with ore cars.  Once the ship was tied up in place, and the hold covers were opened, the workers topside, started to lower these chutes to the hold opening, and in about 30 seconds, empty the ore car above.  There was a crowd of about 30 people watching from vantage points around the road, I think that they all were from out of town.

Our van, and the ship in the distance, someone said that a larger one was due at 10:00PM this evening, I think that this one is good enough.  We went on a drive around a park out on a point and we stopped a few times to look over the edge at Lake Superior.

Our GPS showing Lake Superior all around us.  On the way back to the trailer, we saw this grocery store, and Anne-Marie wanted to check it out.

The owner of the RV Park has a work truck, a 1953 Chevrolet Panel Delivery.  The 53 has a V8 and a automatic transmission, and one look inside, and it looks like a tired old truck with tools and parts from the last or future projects scattered about the seat and randomly about the back of the vehicle.  The really nice 1954 Chevrolet is in the pavilion on display.

We have traveled 6900 miles so far, this season and we have3400 miles to go, before we get back to Tucson.  I must be a seasoned full time traveler, because I look at distances as travel days to get there, and I measure the checking account by travel days left till another retirement check arrives.

On to Duluth today.
